Television & Radio

BEHIND THE SCENES

“Tim exemplifies an unbridled passion for writing and composing that’s conveyed in each song he pens”.  (Indie Artist Magazine)

Tim’s credit as a writer supersedes commercial radio. You’ve more than likely enjoyed Tim’s work on the Weather Channel ©, commercials for the Hilton Corporation ©, and a host of other corporate backdrops including Kellogg’s © respectfully.

Q. How Did You Begin Writing For Television?

If I told you I had a plan and worked it to perfection I’d be lying, actually it was almost the total opposite!

I Say ‘almost’ because I knew when I wrote my 1st jingle that I wanted it placed on TV. That however was a far cry from a ‘plan’ of any kind. I pitched it to some services who promised me the moon and the stars and gave me the weeds and the rocks lol. (I can laugh now but it wasn’t funny back then)

My break came when I was reading an edition of ‘Black Enterprise’ and saw an article about African American CEO’s, Marketing Titans and Innovators.  The article that caught my eye was featuring a business woman we will call her ‘Wanda’ (for privacy’s sake).

Wanda was the head of ethnic marketing for Kellogg’s at the time so I figured it wouldn’t be the 1st time I was told ‘no’ and I sent her an email.

After a couple months with no reply I’d forgotten about the email and moved on, later that summer (2002) I received an email with the subject “Loved Your Idea Would You Be Interested In Chatting?”!

Of course I was interested! We connected and the rest is history – from there I’d go on to pitch ideas to Hilton, The Weather Channel, and Independant Marketing companies.

Q. How Many Artist Have You Written For?

3 Mainstream Artist | 23 Independant Artist | 2 International Artist

[To date respectfully]

Q. Do You Start With An Idea 1st Or Music?

If you’re asking which way a writer should pen a tune then my answer is ‘anyway they want’!  We each have our own rhythm of things, ya know? Some of the artist I know use music first to generate a vibe for writing, others need a quiet space to tune into their creative self before beginning.

I’ve used napkins on restaurant tables, post-it notes laying around the office, the inside of gum wrappers, my voice recorder app etc.  Oh and of course the good old notebook!

The list and ways of writing are endless, as are the methodologies behind how a song is completed. I’ve written the 1st verse to a song and then left it right there lol, only to find it again years later and finish the entire song in like an hour!

I’ve written songs in so many ways I can’t even count – but one thing that stays consistent is where my ideas come from.  I believe they must be authentic! The mood and delivery must be true and real, I must believe in what I’m writing or it doesn’t work ‘for me.’

Q. Are You Working On Anything New?

I hope to always have an answer to this question – because the day I stop creating will be the day I don’t have an answer. As you know by now my latest project ‘Pen 2 Paper Vol. 1’ just released and I am loving how it turned out! I hope to begin work on my next Smooth Jazz project soon as well.

There are usually several ‘irons in the fire’ around here Lol so I’ll be updating this answer quite a bit!

Q. Where Are You From?

I am originally from Chicago but have traveled all over the world and enjoyed many different cultures. I have the USMC to thank for that, Semper Fi Marines! I currently live in North Carolina with my ‘Ace Riding Partna’ & wife, Marie along with our 4 children.

Q. Have A Question You'd Like To Ask Me?

If you do, cool! Email it to me and If it’s something you don’t mind me posting I’ll answer it right here. You never know who else has the same question and by asking it you’ve just become the answer they needed!

Submit your question here and I’ll be glad to answer it for you.

Tim Watson | Artist

Being a writer has always been my first love, I've enjoyed writing for other artist. It just so happens the request to do a collection of my own tunes begin to be a consistent thing that I gave it a try. I'm glad I gave in and became an artist as well, it's been an incredible journey so far!

Hearing songs I've written for other artist being played on the radio is still a great feeling, but hearing my own songs over the airwaves is CRAZY Lol I love it! Always cool when one of my songs pops up on the TV while I'm cleaning the house or entertaining guest - it never get's old!

WRITER, ARTIST

“I don’t care for the box mentality; something about it limits the musical mind and prohibits exploration as well. I don’t do creative boxes…” (npr interview)

This is evident in my newest release ‘Pen 2 Paper Vol. 1’ and I feel real good about how things turned out with this one! I’ve always enjoyed writing for other artist and have been very fortunate to develope some straight up genuine relationships with many of them.

I’ve always been a curious soul, wasn’t rambunctious but I didn’t mind asking questions

I’d even wait expecting an answer to things that were far to complicated for my young mind to grasp, but still I’d ask.  It’s this very same curiosity about life, people, beliefs and other things that led me to write ‘Pen 2 Paper’.

I’ve teamed up with some incredibly gifted individuals who helped to breathe audible life to this project.  From the east coast to the west coast  artist that i’ve either written for previously or have met along this musical journey laced each track just right!

Besides being a dad to 5 (lol Yeah I said 5 = F.I.V.E! lol) amazing children I’m also the most fortunate man alive thanks to my wife Marie. As I wrote this album I thought about all the things in this world that take our attention away from things that really matter you know?  Like our well being, Joy, Peace, good laughter, and health just to name a few.

As a Dad to both sons and daughters I found myself asking ‘how my children would feel about ‘All My Might’?  What questions would flood their teenage minds after hearing ‘Free 2 Be’ or how would the listener relate to ‘Everyday’?  Writing these songs not only called for an introspective view of my own inner beliefs and prejudices but also opened my eyes to other worlds outside of my own.

Each artist was meticulously chosen to sing the particular song he or she is featured on.  I chose who I believed could convey with both passion and conviction the message within music.  They did not disappoint!

SMOOTH JAZZ WELCOMES TIM TO THE GENRE

Tim’s 2002 breakout work “Soultopia – The Tim Watson Project” introduced the Chicago Native to the Contemporary Jazz genre and was a catalyst for his 2007 Smooth Jazz follow-up “Sunday Afternoon.” Both projects have garnered the talented artist a modest presence within the genre.

Tim’s evolution as a writer clearly gives the new listener a taste of what his fans have known for years, “his style is addictive…” (UK Smooth Jazz Blog)

It’s the signature melody lines and catchy hooks that make his music immediately identifiable.

2015 has proven to be an exciting year for the Chicago native and Keyboardist. “When Marie Smiles” the 1st single from Tim’s last album “Up & At’em” was released to radio August 1st of 2015.  The single was the #1 most added tune on the Billboards and went on to gain a respectable #19 slot nationwide. Tim also enjoyed widespread rotation on Sirius XM Satellite Radio with multiple weeks showing #1 spins according to Nelson Sound-Scan.

“Being a writer and composer has always been my first love, I enjoyed writing for other artist and was content doing so” says Tim. “It just so happens the request to do a collection of my own tunes begin to be so overwhelming that I gave it a try”.  Judging from the responses,  and radio play it’s evident the decision to release his own project was a fantastic one!

While International fans have labeled his style “addictive and honest…” (Japan Smooth Jazz Magazine 2007) one thing is certain. Tim Watson seems to have found his way into the ears and hearts of music lovers all around the world.

Tim is a registered writer/publisher with ASCAP and is the founder of 9th Hour Music L.L.C.
